[5e] Class: Mystic Theurge

I spent some time working through some updates of a couple of 3.5 prestige classes, and came up with some concepts that I think work somewhat well, borrowing a touch from Pathfinder as well. The first one is the Mystic Theurge; if you would prefer a PDF version of the document, you can find it hosted on Google Docs.

When working through a 5e Theurge, I considered that in most past editions, the Mystic Theurge was considered a painful trap due to nerfed caster levels, and spell slot progression. 5e multiclassing patches alot of that up, so the Mystic Theurge becomes more about versatility as a caster; you some of the upfront spells you know for versatility later, and gain the ability to recover more powerful spell slots by sacrificing lower level slots.

I also uplifted the Spell Synthesis feature from the Pathfinder Mystic Theurge to give a fun, powerful (and potentially game breaking) single action, double spell cast at level 20.

Seeking to blend their learnings across the spectrum of the Weave, Mystic Theurges look to eschew the limits placed on them by Mystra by twisting their magical learnings together.

In order to advance as a Mystic Theurge, you must meet the following prerequisites (in addition to the multi-classing prerequisites for your existing class):

• Spellcasting Ability 15. Mystic Theurges require the greatest of skill to combine their weaves. They must have a minimum of 15 in each spell casting ability they have.

• Proficiency in Arcana and Religion. Studying and combining the Weave requires intimate knowledge of Mystra’s teachings and the study of magic.

• Spellcasting. You must have reached level 5 in two classes that grant spellcasting abilities.

As a Mystic Theurge you gain the following class features.

Hit Points

Hit Dice: 1d8 per Mystic Theurge level.

Hit Points per Level: 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per Mystic Theurge Level.

Tools: None Saving Throws: None Skills: None

Equipment The Mystic Theurge prestige class does not grant any special equipment.

Starting at 1st Level, Mystic Theurges continue their previous magical studies in both classes that grants them spell casting abilities. When determining spells known or prepared for each of your classes, calculate your spell caster level by adding your Mystic Theurge level to your base class level, then consult the Preparing and Casting Spells or the Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher section for each of your classes.

When you reach 2nd level, and again at 6th, you can increase one ability of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase an ability above 20 using this feature.

Starting at 5th level you may spend an action to expend lower level spell slots to regain higher spell slots of 2nd level or higher. You may expend two spell slots of a lower level to regain a spell slot one level higher than the highest level expended. When you do so, you may cast a cantrip as a bonus action once until the end of your turn.

When you reach 9th level, you may improve one of your spellcasting abilities by 2, to a maximum of 22.

At level 10 you may cast two spells of 5th level or lower as a single action once per day. Both spells must have a casting time of one action, and may not be the beneficiary of any other effects that would amplify or improve the effects of the spell.
